THE ISSUE

The Problem

Due to heavy rainfall and clogged drainage systems, flooding remains a common problem in urban and local communities. This makes roads difficult to pass and can cause polluted water to enter nearby waterways. Therefore, there is a need for a sustainable solution that can reduce pollution and help prevent flooding.

Bio-Inspired Design & Ecological Feasibility

The mangrove forest display is significant because of the root structures of mangroves, which allow them to survive in waterlogged environments. As heavy rainfall has become increasingly prevalent, flooding caused by clogged drainage systems has become an ongoing problem, making some roads difficult and unsafe to pass through. With this, I propose a mangrove-inspired rainwater filtration garden that can be implemented around our school and local communities to help slow water flow and reduce the effects of flooding. This would use layers of soil and suitable plants to filter pollutants while allowing excess water to gradually infiltrate the ground, addressing localized flooding and poor rainwater management during heavy rainfall. Moreover, it could help improve our surroundings by reducing pollutants before they enter nearby drainage systems. By incorporating the natural water-management functions of mangrove roots, rather than simply copying their appearance, this proposal demonstrates how nature can inspire practical and sustainable solutions to environmental problems.

Material Science & Preservation Logic

The traditional pottery display shows how natural clay can be turned into strong and useful objects through drying and firing. Its clay material can absorb and hold some water, while firing makes it harder and more durable. These properties can inspire the materials used in the mangrove-inspired rainwater filtration garden. For instance, clay or terracotta materials can be used to help guide and hold rainwater while allowing it to slowly move into the soil. The long-lasting nature of traditional pottery also shows how proper preparation and the use of natural materials can make objects more durable. These allow us to use natural, durable, and water-friendly materials instead of relying mainly on artificial materials. This can make the rainwater filtration garden more sustainable while helping manage excess water in the community.

Socio-Technological Critique & Innovation Context

Vicente Manansala’s ‘Madonna of the Slums’ shows the difficult living conditions of ordinary Filipinos in an urban community. The artwork shows that development and progress do not always improve the lives of everyone equally. This can be related to modern society, where rapid industrial growth and technology can also lead to problems such as pollution, waste, and poor living conditions. It shows why technology should be developed with the needs of both people and the environment. This is why innovations that promote environmental awareness can help by creating practical solutions that reduce waste and pollution while improving people's quality of life. Therefore, the artwork reminds us that true progress should benefit communities without harming the environment.
