THE ISSUE

The Problem

Public markets or palengkes in masa areas across the Philippines are often dim, cramped, and poorly ventilated, which forces vendors and consumers to continue to shop and sell in unsafe and undignified spaces. These spaces continue to rely on non-renewable energy sources and unreliable infrastructure for lighting and cooking amidst the constant changes in weather. Hence, this reflects a broader gap that technology and its design have not been properly applied to uplift everyday spaces where most of the population of Filipinos labor and live.

Bio-Inspired Design & Ecological Feasibility

The Geothermal Power Plant model from the National Museum of Natural History demonstrates how natural resources in the Philippines can be sustainably harnessed for energy. The Philippines’ geothermal energy greatly inspired my eco-solution proposal for dim, cramped palengkes, where solar panels and geothermal energy can provide electricity for lighting, proper ventilation, and geothermal cooling to reduce heat in these spaces. The Philippines is abundant in sunlight and volcanic geography; the design reflects ecological feasibility based on our natural resources. The application of these ideas to local markets in masa areas will provide comfort and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy. Overall, this underscores how biodiversity and natural history guide modern innovation in improving people's lives while strengthening Filipino principles, such as resilience.

Material Science & Preservation Logic

Artifacts for weapons, pots, and more in the National Museum of Anthropology are often made from steel, brass, iron, nickel/brass alloys, and wood or bone, indicating the durability and craftsmanship of ancestral Filipinos. These materials in my proposal will be used because of their strength and cultural symbolism for the structures of palengkes. This is due to the artifacts resisting wear and their symbolism of Filipino resilience. More materials such as bamboo, recycled steel, and engineered wood can provide a sturdy and eco-friendly construction today without compromising the people’s safety. This choice of materials reflects the science and preservation of honoring Filipino traditions while addressing modern needs through the integration of materials used by indigenous Filipinos. This ensures that palengkes remain sustainable yet functional.

Socio-Technological Critique & Innovation Context

The art of Garibay often portrays the struggles of the Filipino masses, which showcases the harsh reality of the everyday life they have to live, such as weariness, poverty, and hustle culture in the Philippines. The emotions portrayed in his paintings remind us of the social inequalities faced by Filipinos, especially those in cramped areas. Filipino hardship and survival highlight the urgent need for responsible technology that continues to uplift communities. The solar lighting and geothermal cooling proposal in palengkes responds to this call by creating safer, cooler, and more dignified spaces for the vendors and consumers. This proposal highlights that eco-technology is not only an ecological solution but also promotes social justice by linking the historical struggles to modern innovation. Garibay shows how art can be a medium to inspire people to have the drive and empathy to create change in Philippine history.
